My Name is Jorge on Both Sides of the River
Jane Medina
This poem anthropology is based on a boy who recently moved to United States. It's a come pleat Asian of many poems in which he describes certain events, situations, observations that he makes. He goes onto express how he feels. Also, the inner bottle that Jorge goes through on a constant basis. On the cover of the book, we could see a distraught Jorge inside a classroom setting. Ultimately this poem reflects on the reality of many children who immigrate to the United States whether or not it was against their will. Many come at a young age and are just expected to assimilate into a new country and language. Any children also face the reality on a constant basis of the fear of not being enough. Islandborn
Junot Díaz
Lola is a beautiful young girl who is asked to create a project about where she is from. The only problem is, she does she's from the island yet, she doesn't really know much about it. She asked her neighbors, her family members, and her grandmother. She ends up asking an elder from her apartment building and he told her about the story of the monster that tried to break the island. She ends up identifying herself and being able to say who she really is and where she is from. This book is considered a picture book because the illustrations are not only wonderfully made, but the illustrations help portray the story in such a way that is visually pleasing to the reader. The ultimate theme of this story is that it is important to be able to identify yourself and know that where you are from is a beautiful place.
