Contemporary Realistic Fiction and Realistic Fiction

 Enemy Pie

Derek Munson

This realistic fiction book basically talks about how a boy named Jeremy Ross, this boy got the attention of many new kids on the block. This angered the main character because he believes that the boy was mean to him, and he swore that they would never be friends. He even created an enemy list, because of how much she disliked him. As the book goes along the end of the meeting, playing, and getting along well. Jeremy is invited over for dinner and they end up eating pie. It turns out it wasn't an enemy pie, just a really really good pie. The overall theme for this book is about friendship and how people have more in common than what they realize. This book would be considered realistic fiction because it shows a story that could possibly happen in real life, but it is more generalized to anyone and it focuses on a broad topic such as friendship. The illustrations of this book show all characters have a really big head, the lustrations also help us see how the emotions of the main character change as time progresses. I have always enjoyed reading this book to my students, it shows them how they need to treat each other and I also do an SEL lesson about friendships and making new friends. It also shows students how easily relatable this topic is, since making new friends is something that we all go through as children.

Other Words for Home
Jasmine Warga

This story takes place during a time. And which many Syrian refugees were trying to escape Syria. There has been a huge conflict of war during 2015. This book is based on those events, but Warga  created a fictional character. Jude is a regular teenager from Syria. She argues with her mom, she loves movies, and she loves anything that has to do with American culture. Suddenly her world is turned upside down whenever warfare strikes her city, she ends up living with her pregnant mother to the US where she is "visiting" her uncle. She struggles finding comfort in her new normal. Her school can be overwhelming, and it doesn't help that her cousin is not wanting to help her fitted. The ultimate theme of this book is that no matter where life may take us, home is a place where we find the silver lining in every dark situation we may encounter. This book is considered contemporary realistic fiction because warfare did truly happen in Syria in 2015, and a fictional character was created due to those events.

The main difference between realistic fiction and contemporary realistic fiction is that in a realistic fictional book, the theme seems to be more broad in the sense that it could occur at any time period. On the other hand, contemporary realistic fiction deals more with social events that are currently happening during that specific time period.
